4. Application-level gateways
It is technically a proxy and is often referred to as proxy firewall protection. The Application-level gateways combine some of the characteristics of packet filtering firewalls and those of circuit-level portals.
The disadvantage is that gateways that filter at the application layer can significantly impact network performance.
